Local History

In the Fall of 2008, Brothers Miguel Esparza, Erik Burgos, Alan Perez and Ruben Garcia were discussing the lack of male Latino representation in the Greek system at Southern Methodist University, as well as the small size of the minority student body at SMU. The Latino community on campus was divided into different social groups. Furthermore, they noticed there was no fraternity on campus that focused its efforts in empowering the Latino community through disseminating its rich culture. They aspired to establish an organization with a strong international reputation for molding young Latinos into leaders of their communities, the country, and the world. This would further promote a positive image of Latinos in the University by encouraging a more solid and unified community.

Thus, Brothers Miguel Esparza, Erik Burgos, Alan Perez. and Ruben Garcia began their search for a Latino fraternity that met the needs of the SMU community. After agreeing that Sigma Lambda Beta was what their university needed on their campus, they met with Brother Femando Salazar, Coordinator of Latino Students, and began the process of bringing Sigma Lambda Beta to SMU. On October 7, 2008, the first interest meeting of Sigma Lambda Beta at SMU was held in the portico meeting rooms of the Hughes Trigg Student Center.

The fervor in support of the Fraternity was so encouraging that the word spread throughout the campus and into the broader community. This in turn led Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. to become the first Latino-based fraternity on the campus of Southern Methodist University. On Monday, May 18, 2009, the Founding Brothers from Southern Methodist University found the eternal brotherhood that they had been in search of. This moment brought the first four into the proud family of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. at Southern Methodist University.

On the 27th day of June in the year 2011, the brothers of the Southern Methodist University Colony were granted the prestigious honor of chapter status. From that day forth they were known as the Mu Delta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. This was another milestone earned towards becoming true leaders on their campus.
